_______ History Month (insert minority)
I know I am kind of ranty as opposed to intellectual at times but I hope that on some level the stuff we put on hear is more than just a rant. Anyway. Today my thoughts have been about Black History Month. What are we telling our students when we say “February is Black History Month”. I feel like that is saying Black people are important but only for a month, oh and only for the shortest month of the year. Come on. And if we are doing that then why isnt there "Women's History Month"(there might actually already have this.....) or "Latino History Month" or "American Indian History Month" ...why dont we have those......becasue its wrong and lame to say we are going to celebrate a whole groups contributions to our history in one insignificant month. As a future teacher I just think that it would be a better idea to celebrate people that have contributed to our society of all races all through out the year, every month. It is our responsibility to teach our students what the history books leave out or elaborate on what the history book skim over. And I don’t just mean Black people either; I think our history books are appalling. They fail to adequately cover the contributions, hardships and accomplishments of women of all colors and people from all races and religions that are not white, Christian men. All peoples history should be woven into the quilt we call history with each peice of thread, not just in one square. So as a future teacher I plan to teach outside of the books and hope that it will contribute to a more well-rounded, better educated, more empathic student at the end of the year. Even if I end up being a kindergarten teacher.
